Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans
Hurricanes are a disturbance common to the New Orleans system. Overtime, there has been a loss of sedimentation and wetland area prompting piecemeal infrastructure solutions. Erosion of the area’s resilience to hurricanes turned a disturbance into the disaster that was Hurricane Katrina.
Disturbance regimes are a critical feature of salmon landscapes, providing variability and diversity. Human activity has disrupted the frequency, magnitude, duration, and predictability of disturbances occurring in the Pacific salmon environment. When these altered disturbance regimes assume characteristics outside the evolutionary history and the range of random fluctuations previously experienced, the resilience of salmon populations is compromised.
