The goal of this project is to conduct a national assessment of the status of fisheries cooperatives in Mexico. This is the first study of its type in Mexico it is co-designed together with the organized small-scale fisheries sector (encompassing more than 1,000 cooperatives), the Mexican Federal Government and Civil Society.
The position is for one year (potentially renewable to two) and based at the Duke Marine Lab in Beaufort, North Carolina. This is a great opportunity as a stepping-stone for someone interested in gaining experience before continuing towards a PhD degree.
Responsibilities and Activities:
1) Coordination of data collection activities in Mexico with the support of the national coordinator based in Mexico.
2) Database development.
3) Preliminary analysis of qualitative and quantitative data (and perhaps geospatial data too).
4) Coordination of information and data flow among members of the lab and other researchers associated with the project but based in other geographies.
5) Assist with the elaboration of peer-review publications and promotional and outreach materials to decision makers and the general public.
6) Assist with administrative tasks related to the project
We are looking for someone with the following:
a. Excellent organizational skills
b. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish.
c. Excellent collegial skills: Someone that enjoys their work and has a great sense of humor.
d. Availability to travel to Mexico and to Durham (3.5 hrs from the Duke Marine Lab).
e. A Masters degree in hand at the start of employment.
f. A deep desire to learn.
g. Experience in the coordination of working teams, and/or database construction, and/or the design and implementation of economic field experiments, and/or analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, and/or preparation of peer-review publications.
